pinhole solargrams

Slow photography, capturing the path of the sun across the sky throughout the year as (in my northern latitude) it seems to move from barely skimming the horizon to soaring high overhead.

These images were captured on out of date black and white photographic paper, using pinhole cameras I fashioned out of coffee tins, cardboard packaging tubes, or yoghurt pots, which were fixed in place for the duration of the exposure. Most of them took 6 months to capture, from one solstice to the next. They were all created in Edinburgh, Scotland – at 55.95 degrees north – in various locations: from my bedroom window; from friends’ gardens and sheds and balconies; and from the shed in my old allotment. Once exposed, I scanned the original analogue negatives, and digitally reversed them to create these positive images. Some also show light reflections from the inside of the shiny metal tins of the cameras, or the marks of water on the paper negative, where the camera wasn’t waterproof.
