I’m a chronically ill and disabled artist, amongst many other identities; living in Edinburgh, Scotland. In a previous life, when still well and abled, I spent more than 25 years working as a hydrogeologist in Scotland and around the world; and running, hiking and swimming in the wilds; and creating some art. In the last few years, since severe chronic illness means I can no longer carry on my old job, my long career that I was trained for, or any paid work at all, I’ve continued to create art, adapting my practice in ways that fit my needs. Creative practice is doing something I love, when I can no longer do most of the things I love; a means of making things, when I can’t make much anymore; and an important part of how I try to process and cope with the challenging experience of becoming and being chronically ill and disabled in our ableist world.
